About

Welcome to the website of The Capel Christmas Fair! I hope that this website gives you a flavour of what we are trying to achieve at our annual Christmas Fair in Capel. Last year, 2021, we held our first Capel Christmas Fair and it was a resounding success, raising over £1,600 for both charities we support. The idea was dreamed up by Suzanne Cole and Debbie von Bergen, both residents of Capel and worshippers at St John the Baptist church in Capel.

Our first chosen charity is the Parish churches of St John the Baptist, Capel and St Margaret’s in Ockley. Secondly, we have chosen the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA). Suzanne’s father Colin died in 2015 of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), just eighteen months after diagnosis. The Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) were instrumental in giving information and advice as her family went through Colin’s illness and ultimately his death. With your help, we can raise much-needed funds which will help support patients and their families with MND now and in the future. Also, crucially, it will help fund vital research into the disease which in turn might produce new medications that could help patients suffering with the disease, or maybe even a cure one day. The East Surrey Branch of the MNDA will be with us at the Fair, selling packs of Christmas cards – please do support them if you come along! They have a lovely range each year. The branch is run entirely by volunteers and aims to provide the best possible support to local people with MND, their families, and carers.

Originally, there was a team of two organising the Fair – Debbie von Bergen and myself, Suzanne Cole. We were sorry to say goodbye to Debbie recently as she moved to Somerset. She has been integral in much of Capel village’s life, particularly the church and the first Christmas Fair last year. I have organised local events including the first Christmas Fair and our annual Vicarage Fete. Both Debbie and myself have worshipped at St John the Baptist and played a role in several church events over the last few years.

As I write, we are nearing our second Fair in November 2022 (Saturday 19th) and I hope that, despite the current cost of living crisis, that people will want to join us and see the lovely line-up of stalls that we have to offer. Many are local businesses and so many of our stalls are selling their own handmade products which are lovingly made. We also welcome local brewers Dorking Brewery and Silent Pool Distillers who are popular in the Surrey Hills! Why not come along and sample their beers and gin and take some home for yourself or gift some for Christmas? See the ‘Stallholders’ tab on the home page of the website for our fabulous line up this year!

Our aim is to offer you, the visitor, a host of lovely stalls which support local businesses wherever possible, in the hope that you will treat yourself or buy Christmas gifts for others! We have deliberately kept our entrance fee the same as 2021 – that is £3.00 to include a hot cuppa! So if you’re able to get to Capel Village, just off the A24 between Horsham and Dorking to join us for our second Capel Christmas Fair, we would love to welcome you to both our lovely village in the heart of the beautiful Surrey Hills and the Fair itself.

With very best wishes,

Suzanne Cole
